Prayer #98: For the Latest Possible Breakthrough in the Development of a COVID-19 Vaccine
As the global race to produce a safe and viable vaccine for the Coronavirus continues, just today it was announced that a vaccine developed in partnership by the German biotech firm BioNTech and the U.S. pharmaceutical company Pfizer has shown significant potential in early-stage human trials. Two doses of the drug BNT16b1 were administered to 24 healthy volunteers, and after 28 days, they all developed higher levels of COVID-19 antibodies than typically seen in infected people. Three of the four people experienced a short fever after the higher of the two injections. There were no other ill effects. The vaccine will now be tested with 30,000 volunteers, beginning this month. The BNT16b1 vaccine becomes the fourth promising candidate for a COVID-19 vaccine to enter into these later-stage expanded human trials, along with possible vaccines from Moderna, CanSino Biologics, and Inovio Pharmaceuticals. If the BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine gains approval for general use, the companies are gearing up to produce 100 million doses by the end of this year and 1.2 billion doses by the end of 2021.
Let us indeed pray for the successful testing of this candidate for a COVID-19 vaccine, as well as the others in testing stages (17 in all are in some stage of testing). Pray that a workable vaccine with little or no side effects can be developed soon---even before year's end. Pray for God to give great wisdom and scientific/medical insight to those working the development of these potential vaccines, as well as for those who are conducting the trials. Pray for God's protection for the people who are volunteering for the testing of these drugs.
