Prayer #117: For Funerals and Homecoming Services During the Coronavirus Crisis
The indoor restrictions and social distancing required due to the COVID-19 virus has drastically affected funeral and homecoming services for loved ones. Most church buildings are still closed to almost everything; some are having small indoor worship services, but nothing else within their facilities.
This has made funerals and homecoming services very difficult to have. There are simply few if any facilities where they can take place. This was brought home to me very recently, when my good friend of more than 30 years, Bishop Bill Spain, an African-American pastor of long-standing here in Raleigh who is known by many, passed away. Finding a place for the funeral, which would potentially be quite large, has proven to be difficult. Church buildings are just not open to these right now.
These services are an important part of the grieving process, as well as the fact that they provide time for the celebration of a loved one's life here, and, in the case of Christians, the celebration of their homecoming to be with the Lord. Without these funeral and homecoming services, these important and necessary observances are withheld.
Please do pray today for ways to be found to hold funerals and homecoming services. Pray for church buildings or other venues to be opened up for these services. Pray for outside options to be found as well. And please do pray for the homecoming service of Bishop Spain here in Raleigh, which is scheduled for this Saturday, July 26th, but for which no venue has yet been found.
2 Cor.: 5:8: "We are confident, yes, well pleased to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord."
